Dear FGSD Parents,
We are now three weeks away from the start of the new school year (September 14, 2020). Our staff is working tirelessly to get things ready in order to have a successful launch into Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL). We know there are many questions still lingering on how CDL will go. We encourage you to visit the district website to review the presentation that was given to the School Board last week on what a typical student’s day will look like. Leading up to the start of the new school year, teachers will be reaching out personally to each family to review what their individual class procedures will look like. If you have immediate needs please contact your school principal -- they can help get you additional information.
The district is developing a plan that will offer training to parents on how to use the new digital learning tools that will be implemented this school year. These tools were chosen based on the feedback the district received from parents and staff at the end of last school year. We will communicate these training resources as soon as possible.
We have received information from the Oregon Department of Education that meal availability throughout CDL will return to the way meals were served prior to the pandemic. That is to say that for those who qualify for “Free & Reduced Lunch” will continue to qualify and for those who purchased meals will continue to have that availability. All meals will be served at the individual buildings. More information will be provided as these schedules are finalized. The Federal Government is still discussing the possibility of additional funding that would allow all students to receive free meals -- as it was in the Spring.
As we are all painfully aware, this is not the typical start to a new school year. We know that there is a lot of anxiety and frustration being felt by students, parents and staff members. We want our students and staff to be safe. We also want to facilitate the learning necessary for our students to be successful. Our hope is that working together, we will meet this challenging time head on and overcome the roadblocks that are facing us.

Protocol for Visiting School Buildings
To ensure the safety of staff, students and the community, we strongly encourage you to limit your in-person interactions at the school buildings. If you need to meet with school principals or staff, please contact the school office to schedule a meeting. We will be conducting as many meetings as possible through Zoom video conferencing or over the phone.
Technology/Device Distribution
If your student does not have a device and you would like to check one out from the district, a “device request form” will soon be available. Individual schools will then be scheduling times for families to pick up requested devices at schools prior to the beginning of the school year. It will be similar to how it was done in the Spring -- drive-thru style.
Surplus student furniture
We are currently taking an inventory of our excess school furniture supply to see if we have any further items that we can make available to district families. We will communicate additional availability when we have more information.
Kinder Jumpstart
Kindergarten Jumpstart is an opportunity for new kindergarteners and their families to make connections with building staff, check out technology and pick up needed supplies. This will happen on September 14th by appointment and in a drive-thru fashion. Additional details and classroom schedules will be communicated from your student’s building principal.

Estimados padres de FGSD,
Ahora estamos a tres semanas del inicio del nuevo año escolar (14 de septiembre de 2020). Nuestro personal está trabajando incansablemente para preparar las cosas a fin de tener un lanzamiento exitoso en el aprendizaje integral a distancia (CDL). Sabemos que todavía quedan muchas preguntas sobre cómo funcionará la CDL. Le recomendamos que visite el sitio web del distrito para revisar la presentación que se le dio a la Junta Escolar la semana pasada sobre cómo será el día típico de un estudiante. Antes del comienzo del nuevo año escolar, los maestros se comunicarán personalmente con cada familia para revisar cómo se verán los procedimientos de cada clase. Si tiene necesidades inmediatas, comuníquese con el director de su escuela; ellos pueden ayudarlo a obtener información adicional.
El distrito está desarrollando un plan que ofrecerá capacitación a los padres sobre cómo usar las nuevas herramientas digitales de aprendizaje que se implementarán este año escolar. Estas herramientas fueron elegidas en base a los comentarios que el distrito recibió de los padres y el personal al final del año escolar pasado. Comunicaremos estos recursos de capacitación lo antes posible.
Hemos recibido información del Departamento de Educación de Oregon de que la disponibilidad de comidas en toda la CDL volverá a ser la misma que se servía antes de la pandemia. Es decir, aquellos que califiquen para “Almuerzo gratis o reducido” continuarán calificando y quienes compraron comidas continuarán teniendo esa disponibilidad. Todas las comidas se servirán en los edificios individuales. Se proporcionará más información a medida que se finalicen estos horarios. El gobierno federal todavía está discutiendo la posibilidad de financiamiento adicional que permitiría a todos los estudiantes recibir comidas gratis, como sucedió en la primavera.
Como todos sabemos dolorosamente, este no es el comienzo típico de un nuevo año escolar. Sabemos que los estudiantes, padres y miembros del personal sienten mucha ansiedad y frustración. Queremos que nuestros estudiantes y personal estén seguros. También queremos facilitar el aprendizaje necesario para que nuestros estudiantes tengan éxito. Nuestra esperanza es que, trabajando juntos, afrontemos este momento desafiante y superemos los obstáculos que enfrentamos.

Protocolo para visitar edificios escolares
Para garantizar la seguridad del personal, los estudiantes y la comunidad, le recomendamos encarecidamente que limite sus interacciones en persona en los edificios escolares. Si necesita reunirse con los directores o el personal de la escuela, comuníquese con la oficina de la escuela para programar una reunión. Llevaremos a cabo tantas reuniones como sea posible a través de videoconferencias de Zoom o por teléfono.
Distribución de tecnología / dispositivos
Si su estudiante no tiene un dispositivo y le gustaría obtener uno del distrito, pronto estará disponible un “formulario de solicitud de dispositivo”. Las escuelas individuales programarán horarios para que las familias recojan los dispositivos solicitados en las escuelas antes del comienzo del año escolar. Será similar a cómo se hizo en el estilo Spring - drive-thru.
Mobiliario de estudiante excedente
Actualmente estamos haciendo un inventario de nuestro exceso de suministro de mobiliario escolar para ver si tenemos más artículos que podamos poner a disposición de las familias del distrito. Comunicaremos disponibilidad adicional cuando tengamos más información.
Kinder Jumpstart
Kindergarten Jumpstart es una oportunidad para que los nuevos niños de kindergarten y sus familias establezcan conexiones con el personal del edificio, verifiquen la tecnología y recojan los suministros necesarios. Esto sucederá el 14 de septiembre con cita previa y en un servicio de autoservicio. El director de la escuela de su estudiante comunicará detalles adicionales y horarios de clases.
